I have read recently that these small wattage cfl bulbs, with the regular light bulb base, can be used to start and or grow plants indoors? also heard of the LED light set ups...anyone, oh lets say like DOUGLAS know anythang about this?

Those CFL lights work well for plant production Bro. I've seen some great grows using them. Very bright and no real heat comes from them. A 12 on/off cycle seems to work the best IMO

Well the ones that produce 100 watts or more are the best to use. Note I said "produce" they will only draw a fraction of that in elec. The white or the daylight work well.

well it's like three windows we have that get good enuff light for the plants we have brought in for the winter, with the growth they experienced this past summer, I'm looking out of a small strip of window to look outdoors. just wanna keep the cost low, and save the electricity for the massive amount of seedlings we raise for the garden

I made a setup for xdx last year and it ran off a lil 12v adapter, somewhere around 100 LED's I think, can't member for sure. The RED's, GREEN's and BLUE's are the colors you want to look for, they save up to 90% on your electric bill

How close to da plants does the light need to be? and remember..we just want to keep em alive (Please don't grow no more till spring)

About the same as a fluorescent tube as far as distance, most LED's are 20-30% angle but they also have them at 90-170 degree angles as well which will spread the light out more

so we got these LED flashlights fer christmas, and the color is almost blue? how does this transmit the needed spectrum to the plants, or do they all have that bluish hue?

They vary in color, most LED flashlights have them white blue colors which I don't like that much. Some have a greenish white color and some have a yellowish color which I like best. They came out with these a while back and I'm going to try some when I get a chance.

Hey Guys...........As a grower for quite a few years under lights ......For best results HID's 400 to 1000 watt in high pressure sodium or metal halide.........Ive grown with both. MH is mostly justed for veg as HPS for flowering and fruiting .......both work. As far as CF they will let you grow from seed to harverst .....You dont get the growth like you would from a HID but they do work. LED's frankly folks they are more a waste of time than useful.......At a local hydroponic gardening center Ive been watching a 400 led light system over a small garden of lettuce........I think my toenails have grown quicker in the last 2 weeks ...hahahahaha seriously the growth Ive seen isnt worth the effort under these lights. Ok so now you know Im not a fan of LED......anyway I will remain to use HID ......although the new fluorscent light in a T5 gives great results as well in a 6500k bulb with different color spectrums.....well worth a look at if you dont wanna spend the bucks on HID lighting ...........Also I still do my germination under standard old 4 foot fluorescent bults and CF lighting ....Happy growing guys Ron

I just use the compact flors that use 26 watts of electricity, emit light level comparable to a 100w incandescent bulb. Daylight spectrum. These are just for starting plants, not growing them to flowering etc. I just want to keep them alive til I can put them out, lol. There is a new light called CCFL (cold-cathode florescent light) that I am keeping my eyes on. So far they only come in small sizes not big enough for plants. They are a foot long and a quarter-inch diameter, used for display cases, run on 12Volts so I used them with my solar cells at the cabin. When they make these bigger they'll be the thing, they are INTENSE for their size and use miniscule electricity.

I was just doing some reading on the LED's ... boy are they spendy I was reading up at this site .. www.homegrownlights.com/index.html Seems as tho there is a different color you need for different stages of growth .. I don't know that much about lighting ... but so far as I can tell I would need about 4 of these in different stages of color for different growth ..

Interesting Rock...so, the daylight bulbs are just enough to keep them growing through the winter then...
Like you, we don't need flowers, in fact, don't really want alot of growth...
cause we just don't have many windows to keep plants in..2 that get enough light, so we have everything that was outside, that we wanted to winter over...CROWDED into 2 windows..
and it's already hard to see out, they get much bigger...and we're going to have to do something else
I see there's a difference in the bulbs because we went shopping the other day, could get 4 of one type...dunno what they were...but they were 7.74
then there was 3 for 7.24...but they were marked daylight.
now another question, how many solar cells and associated equipment would a person need to run a light, and sometimes a grinder in the shop to sharpen my mower blades..... no power out there, so I run a heavy power cord out there right now...

Phil, do you know 12vman at the Backwoodshome site? He would have all those answers for you to your solar questions. I'm a dummy.
