Well the pipe head is in the fire now, cross my fingers. It's been there for the allotted time so just waiting for the fire to go out naturally. I think if this one doesn't work I will be really disappointed. Well no point in worrying now, I'll fish it out just before fireworks time so I can say I finished it in the same year I started anyway,

Cracks! Plenty of cracks. I will not let this stop me. I have fired so many pieces using wood as the fuel source, I can't believe that I can't do one more. Those other pieces were fired in a wood stove tho, I guess the better control over the draft etc is more important than I thought. This trouble I'm having only increases my respect for the old Navajo potters that wood-fire big pots in an outdoor pit with a piece of tin thrown over the top! Guess we never see or hear about the cracked and broken ones, and to think my pieces are no more than 3 inches in the largest dimension. So...here's the plan as of Jan 2nd. I will use all the scraps of clay and grind some of the fired clay to make grog to add at a high rate- maybe 40% (I usually stay around 10%). That will make the clay rougher, more like Raku but also more resistant to thermal shock. By now no one is probably reading this, too depressing to hear an old fool's troubles, LOL.

Here's a photo of the stem this pipehead will go on to WHEN I get it done. Mouthpiece is at the right. That wood paneling was maybe a bad choice for a background, can't see the knapped point too well. I think it still needs something, maybe a few feathers?

I don't have a good pit to fire in now, so that is on hold. I cut a piece of cherry wood to make the bowl to complete my pipe. Still have some carving to do on it but I know it won't explode at least, lol. Added a few turkey feathers. Needs a new picture.
